History

The Kirkwall Airport was founded and commissioned in the 1940s for the defense of the Scapa Flow naval base as RAF Grimsetter. The airfield first formed the part of the cases at Scapa Flow, for the main fleet anchorage. After three years, in 1943, the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm is formerly known as RNAS Kirkwall, which became HMS Robin. Later, in 1948, the control on the airport passed to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Then the power passed over to the Highlands and Islands Airports (HIAL), which was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the authority of the Civil Aviation. In 1995, the ownership of the Highlands and Islands Airports passed to the Secretary of the state for Scotland and, finally, moved to Scottish Ministers, who tend to be the current owners of the HIAL.
