History of Development

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport has gone through several stages of development, since its nine-decade of serving Montana. From the very beginning, the airport was called Seifert Airport, and then it was changed to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. It was the first airport in Belgrade, that was renamed after the aviation pioneer Wayne Seifert, in 1928. BZN was opened in 1929, and it had six runways, the width of which was 100 feet and the length - approximately 1,200-1,300 feet.

During the years of 1940-1950, the significant constructions were done. As a result, the airport had new runways, taxiways, lighting, and aprons. Another wave of reconstruction started in 1990, and the renovation project included building the rental car parking, expansion of the terminal building, remodeling of holding bay on Taxiway A. Nowadays BZN has under its control: Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) operations, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel, and the Gallatin County Sheriff's Airport Office.

Airlines and Destinations

Along with Northwest Airlines, Frontier also started operating at BZN. In 1967 Frontier began service from Convair 580 to BZN (Missoula, Salt Lake City). In 1977 Northwest began its first seasonal non-stop service to Minneapolis. After one year, in 1978, Frontier also started a non-stop service to Denver. In 1982, Western Airlines started flights to Salt Lake City, in 1988 SkyWest Airlines added the same service as well. In 1990, Billings and Spokane were the new routes operated by Horizon Air. In 1996, Horizon Air started a daily non-stop service to Seattle.

Nowadays, six significant airlines are serving at BZN airport: Allegiant, Delta, Frontier, Horizon, Northwest, and United. Concerning the non-stop destinations from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport are the following: Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle/Tacoma.

Annual Passenger Traffic at BZN

The annual passenger traffic has changed gradually at BZN. From 1973, the total number of passengers has increased from 25,000 to 50,000, in 1976. Regarding 1986, enplanements reached 100,000 that has happened for the first time. The figure changed dramatically in 2012; the passenger boarding was - 425,000. The last year, 2019, was the best as the total number of passenger enplanements reached 775,000. The Total number of Aircraft Operations at BZN has rocked from 47,100, in 1993 to 80,606 in 2007. That means that the annual increase is approximately 3.9%.

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport covers approximately 2,481 acres of land and is above the sea level at 4,473 feet. BZN has three runways: the first one - 2/30 is 8,994 by 150 feet (2,741 by 46 m) its surface is made up by asphalt; the second runway - 3/21 is 2,650 by 75 feet (808 by 23 m) and is also made up with road; the third one -11/29 is 3,197 by 80 feet (974 by 24 m).
