Aspen-Pitkin County Airport, also known as Sardy Field( IATA: ASE, ICAO: KASE, FAA LID: ASE), is a public airport located three miles( approximately 6 km) northwest of Aspen, in Pitkin County, Colorado, U.S.

Aspen-Pitkin County Airport is in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2019-2013, and the airport is categorized as a primary commercial service facility by Federal Aviation Administration.

History

History of Aspen-Pitkin County Airport started in 1946 when John Spachner and Walter Paepcke founded this facility as a public-use gravel landing strip. Aspen Institute became the first user of the airport, at that time the airport facility only consisted of a gravel runway and a cabin terminal building.

Later in 1958, ASE officially went into the public service of the Aspen-Pitkin County. After that, the County expanded the airport area to 400,000 feet, and also widened the runway to 800 feet. The runway was once again extended and lengthened in 1983, and also in 1999. During the period between 1986 and 1987, there was another renovation at the terminal for the enlargement reasons, and the terminal building expanded to 37,500 square feet.

The first airline that served Aspen-Pitkin County Airport was Aspen Airways. Aspen Airways had a scheduled jet service with BAe 146-100, and the first aircraft of the airline were Douglas DC-3s.

In 2017, ASE had 42,405 aircraft operations in total, an average of 116 transactions per day. According to the statistics provided by the Federal Aviation Administration in the year 2019, the airport served approximately 569,000 passengers. At that time, there were 95 based aircraft at the airport, including one glider, three jets, five helicopters, ten multi-engine, and 66 single-engine.
